The article raises the issue of the entry of the Bashkir union Tabyn into the Mongol Empire. For this purpose, data from various sources are used: “The Secret Tale. Mongolian Chronicle of 1240”, “Collection of Chronicles”, Altan Tobchi (“Golden Tale”), Bashkir shezhere and genealogies, as well as the results of published studies. Having considered all the versions of the entry of the Bashkirs into the Mongol Empire, the author notes the contradiction of data on this process in the sources due to which researchers have come up with various hypotheses. The author sees an explanation for these contradictions in the existence of several groups of Bashkirs and suggests dividing the Bashkirs of the first half of the 12th century not into two groups, as a number of researchers do, but into three. These are the western (associated with the Volga Bulgars), southern (nomadic from the Ural Mountains to the Aral Sea) and eastern (those who inhabited the Trans-Urals and the Irtysh region). The Bashkir Tabyn union was part of the eastern group of the Bashkirs, which apparently appeared in the “Secret Tale” under the name “Bachzhigi”. According to information from the source, this group became a part of the Mongol Empire after the military campaign of Jochi in Western Siberia to the “Forest Peoples”. It was also established that Maiky-biy from the Bashkir and Kazakh genealogies was Khorchi-Usun (the elder of Khorchi) from the Mongolian chronicles. The article suggests that Maiky-biy belonged to the Mongolian clan of Baaryn (master). The ethnonym "baryn" or “baaryn” is currently present in the Bashkir and Kyrgyz tribal nomenclature. The author comes to the conclusion that the Bashkir clan Baryn-Tabyn was connected with the medieval Usuns and the Bashkir association Tabyn was a part of this clan.
