This study sets out the fundamental tenets of a research project based on joint fi eldwork, accompanied by a preliminary account of the research outcomes. In addition to the data gathered during the joint fi eldwork, Dávid Somfai Kara also used the report written by Gyula Mészáros as a primary source of information. The original photographs were not presented as illustrations. Instead, they were integrated into the description. Secondly, the explanatory texts written by Galimjan Tagan for the photographs taken by Gyula Mészáros were available for consultation. Somfai Kara provides the reader with a comprehensive linguistic, historical and religious introduction. István Sántha focused on the photographic material and refl ected on the present in the context of a past Bashkurt culture, as outlined by Dávid Kara Somfai. Sántha directly confronted the discrepancies, reduced the number of ambiguous elements, and identifi ed pertinent responses to the queries that emerged by juxtaposing the observations gleaned from the images with his own fi eld experiences. He avoids the juxtaposition of images and text, steering clear of general topics and focusing on matters related to the terrain. By returning the images to their original, local Bashkurt context, he ensures a seamless integration of the two elements, which we believe will reinforce each other
