The article examines the activities of Mambetali Serdalin. Mambetali Serdalin was an outstanding representative of the Kazakh intelligentsia of the late 19th and early 20th century. The work focuses on M. Serdalin’s protest against reforms aimed at transforming the traditional nomadic way of life of the population. The author analyzes the socio-political context in which these events took place. He also examines causes and consequences of the confl ict between traditional steppe societies and the new reforms. Through the prism of his speeches and journalistic activities the article studies M. Serdalin’s role in preserving the cultural and economic foundations of nomadic society, as well as his infl uence on public consciousness and political processes of that time. The article will be of interest to historians, sociologists and all readers interested in the interaction of traditional and modern systems. It will also be useful to those interested in the peculiarities of the struggle to preserve cultural identity in the face of radical change.
