The memorial article is devoted to the life, scientifi c and social activities of the famous Bashkir scientist Doctor of Historical Sciences Professor Rif Ismagilovich Yakupov (08.06.1959–07.11.2019). R.I. Yakupov is the author of almost 200 scientifi c publications including such fundamental monographs as «Teptyari: historical and ethnographic essays. On the problem of the genesis of ethnicity” (M., 2002) and «Archive as an experimental base for a researcher. Historical and Didactic essays» (Ufa, 2016), etc. Topics that R.I. Yakupov worked on throughout his life are extremely interesting and relevant both for Bashkir and Russian and for world ethnology in general. His research interests were extremely extensive. They are ethnology, historiography, source studies, museology, Islamic studies, science, linguistics, history of state and law, general pedagogy, etc. The scientist paid special attention to the theory of ethnos, research methodology, fundamental problems of cultural studies, ethnogenesis and ethnic history of Bashkirs, Tatars, Teptyars and other peoples of the Volga-Ural historical and ethnographic region. The models of the ethnicity genesis in modern and contemporary times proposed by him are extremely interesting and important for theoretical ethnology as a whole.
