Bashkir versification of the 19th century remains a little-explored area of literary criticism and requires its more detailed study. Using the poetry of the Bashkir poet G. Chukuri (1826-1889) as an example the article reveals the features of literary versification and characteristic of this period. For the first time, the specifics of using oriental methods of versification by G. Chukuri are analyzed in detail on the basis of the poems contained in his collection “Shamg az-ziya fi tazkira kaum ahli az-ziya” ("A shining candle in memory of shining faces") published in 1883 on Arabic graphics in Kazan. This book presents elegiac ‘marsiya’ and laudatory ‘kasida’ genres dedicated to Bashkir and Tatar Muslim clerics of the 19th century. It was revealed that G. Chukuri strictly adhered to the eastern poetic traditions that remained unchanged for many centuries in Old Turkic poetry. The collection is written in a high poetic style which was characterized by the use of speech complicated by Arabic and Persian words and speech patterns. The article describes the eastern traditions in the methods of teaching poetic skills used in the 19-th century based on the biographical information of G. Chukuri. Bashkir ‘shakirds’ (future poets) learned this skill. The work examines the varieties of sizes like ‘aruz’ – khazaj’ and ‘ramal’, the poetic forms of ‘kasida’, ‘kyt‘a’, ‘masnavi’ and ‘ghazal’ used by the poet. It was revealed that G. Chukuri's rhymes strictly comply with the norms of Arab-Persian poetics representing accurate rhymes based on graphic identity. The article also examines such means of expressiveness of verse as ‘redif’ and ‘musammat-i mukhtasar’. A characteristic feature of the poems included in the collection is that almost all of them are written in the form of an acrostic. Based on the analysis of the poems included in the collection, it was found that G. Chukuri skillfully mastering the theory of Arab-Persian versification strictly adhered to the canonized principles of versification in size, stanza and rhyme.
