In September 2021, researchers at the Institute of Ethnology at the Budapest Research Center for the Humanities Istvan Shanta and David Shomfai arrived in the Republic of Bashkortostan to conduct a scientific expedition to explore the route traveled by the famous Hungarian turkologist and ethnographer Meszaros Gyula in 1909. The economic, cultural and scientific center of the Bashkir Trans–Urals, the city of Sibay, was chosen as the starting point. It is noteworthy that the Bashkir ethnographer Galimyan Tagan (Taganov Galimyan Girfanovich) (1892–1948), who lived in Hungary, was engaged in the introduction of Meszaros’s heritage into scientific circulation. Two candidates of historical sciences, Yu.A. Absalyamova and F.M. Suleymanov, were invited to join the expedition. The latter is the author of a number of works on the history and ethnography of southeastern Bashkortostan. In general, the expedition has achieved its goal. Most of the way along the route of D. Mesaros was completed. During the expedition, valuable observations were made, photographs and videos were taken, ancient images were identified with the current state of the reliefs, locations of Bashkir nomadic sites, lakes, rivers, villages, houses, mosques and individuals. Meetings were also organized with local historians, descendants of the people depicted in D. Meszaros’s photographs. Lectures were given to students and teachers of the Sibai Institute and an agreement was reached on mutual cooperation.
