For the first time in the history of Gagauz folklore studies we are considering the problem of nomination and systematizing types of folk prose based on published and handwritten texts collected in our thesaurus. The following factors were taken into account in the course of the study: a) the function that each type of prose performs; b) the attitude of the performer and listeners to the content of the story; c) the degree of artistry of the works; d) the relation of the species in question to reality. As a result, Gagauz folklore narratives were divided into two large groups: fabulous epic and non-fabulous prose. However, in some cases the division into species remains unclear.
