This article examines the origin and semantic shift of the French verb punir, the English verb punish and the Russian word penya / peni in a historical context. The article analyzes the ways of borrowing, phonetic, morphological and semantic changes that have occurred with these words in various linguistic and cultural environments. It is revealed that the French punir and the English punish retain a connection with deeper connotations of suffering and damage while retaining the basic meaning of punishment. That indicates the similarity of their semantic fields. Special attention is paid to the specialization of the meaning of the Russian lexeme penalty / penalties in the legal field and the obsolescence of the meaning of “reproaches, complaints”.
