The Altaic heroic tales, like the epics of other Turkic-Mongolian peoples, represent the spiritual heritage of the peoples of Central Asia. They reflect worldviews, archaic rituals, motifs, as well as intertwining with other folklore genres and traditions. In this paper we consider one of the most ancient Altaic legends “Yangar” and compare it with the Kalmyk epic “Dzhangar”. The purpose of the study is to identify common plot elements and motifs in these two outstanding works. For the research, we used various publications and works devoted to the Altai epic, as well as the texts of the epic “Dzhangar” published by N.K Yalatov. The main research method was comparative study of materials and facts related to the topic of the article. An important result of the study was that the identification of common elements and motifs allows for more extensive comparative work with these epic works
