The article examines the significance of the Oka River in the songs and epics of the Russian people. Although the Oka was not the subject of special study in epic studies, its role in the formation of the epic genre in the 10^th–13^th centuries raises questions. In the epics the main heroes traditionally came from the cities located on the Oka River – Murom (Ilya Muromets) and Ryazan (Dobrynya Nikitich). The study contains all the known records of epics made on the Oka and its tributaries in the 19^th–20^th centuries. It is noted that fragments of the epic tradition have been preserved in the territory from the upper reaches of the Oka River (Oryol province) to its lower reaches (Pavlovo village, Nizhny Novgorod province). Special attention is paid to the rare mentions of the Oka River in the texts of epics recorded in the Volga region, the Russian North and Siberia.
