The article examines the use of the hesitative unit “ni” (colloquial form “ney”) in Bashkir oral speech. This phenomenon is actively used in everyday communication and requires detailed study. The relevance of the study is due to the need for a systematic description of this phenomenon and the identification of factors that influence its appearance during conversation. The research used recordings made by the author in the field, as well as texts from the Dialectological Subfund of the Machine Fund of the Bashkir Language. In addition, transcripts of radio and television broadcasts that were posted in the oral subcorpus of the Bashkir- language mass media were analyzed. As a result of the study, it was found that the interrogative pronoun “ni” in spontaneous speech performs communicative and pragmatic functions, and is also used to fill in pauses in conversation. The key factors provoking the appearance of the studied speech difficulty in the communication process are the difficulties associated with finding the most appropriate word that would correspond to the original intention of the speaker, or with remembering a specific word, fact, date, name or title. Based on the analysis of the material, the main methods for eliminating the problem area in the speech production process are determined.
