This article analyzes the events reflected in one document of the epistolary genre preserved in the backgrounds of the personal file of Bashkir ethnographer Nail Valeevich Bikbulatov. This is a letter from Nina Mikhailovna Rudenko who was the widow of the famous scientist Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko sent to N.V. Bikbulatov in October 1973 and further stored in the Scientific Archive of the Ufa Federal Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Correspondence is a special kind of art and literature especially between intelligent people and scientists. One might even say it is the union of science and literature with life. Old letters lift the veil over the events of the past, illuminate dry historical and bibliographic facts with vivid colors of emotions, feelings and joy. N.M. Rudenko’s letter is written in a polite, friendly manner. It contains elements of scientific, artistic, philosophical discourse. It seems to us that familiarization with this document supplemented by our comments and explanations will help readers to get a little closer acquainted with the life and scientific work of S.I. Rudenko whose 140th anniversary is celebrated by the scientific community this year.
