Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko (1885–1969) left a bright trace in Russian science. He proved himself not only as a genuine encyclopedic scientist who excelled in the humanities and technical sciences (archaeology, anthropology, ethnography, museology, hydrology, etc.), but also as a talented researcher and collector of museum collections. In total, he organized 14 expeditions, which resulted in 52 clothing collections, as well as 25 photographic collections and archival documents on the ethnography of 14 peoples of the Russian Empire. In total, this amounts to about 9 thousand items. The scientist made a huge contribution to the collection of ethnographic collections of the peoples of the Ural-Volga region – Bashkirs, Chuvash, Mari, Mordvins, Komi-Zyryans. A significant part of these collections is currently kept in the collections of the Russian Ethnographic Museum (St. Petersburg). The Chuvash collections are distinguished by their uniqueness, representativeness, complexity and scientific value. They were the result of scientific research and collecting activities of the scientist, conducted in 1907, 1912 in Orenburg, Ufa, Samara and Kazan provinces. They thematically present samples of antique embroidered women’s shirts of different age groups, fragments of breast embroidery of women’s shirts, jewelry, utensils, household items, tools, children’s play dolls, etc. A special place among them is occupied by subjects characterizing traditional religion. This includes items reflecting funeral and memorial rituals, the cult of the family and ancestral deity and the evil spirit of the ‘yerekh’, as well as some Chuvash rituals related to the pre-Christian religion and religious beliefs. In the collections of S.I. Rudenko many artifacts on this topic are unique. Currently, it is almost impossible to detect them.
