Sergey Ivanovich Rudenko (1885-1969) was a scientist who successfully worked in various fields of humanities and natural sciences: ethnography, anthropology, archeology, geography and hydrology. His ethnological, archaeological and anthropological research became widely known. His fundamental monograph “Bashkirs: Historical and Ethnographic Essays” (1955) became a classic example of studying the culture of the people. S.I. Rudenko is also known as the discoverer of the famous Pazyryk mounds, a researcher of ancient culture and art of Altai and Asia. While his research including expeditionary research in the field of ethnology, anthropology and archeology is well known, his work in the Commission for the Study of the Tribal Composition of the Russian Population still remains poorly investigated. This article aims to fill in some of the gaps in this area. It should be noted that S.I. Rudenko had to delve into and deal with various areas of the organization’s activities in accordance with his position being the scientific secretary of this Commission. Based on archival materials first introduced into scientific circulation the article examines the participation of S.I. Rudenko in the preparation of the First All-Union Population Census of the country organized in 1926.
