The article analyzes the materials of the personal fund of Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko (1885–1969) stored in the St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPbF ARAN). The first inventory of the fund 1004 contains 669 items of storage covering the period 1880–1972. Archival documents include scientific papers, biographical materials, expedition reports, correspondence, illustrations for works and organizational documents. Over 40 cases (more than 800 pages) are devoted to Bashkortostan, Bashkirs and the study of nomadic civilization. The materials related to the preparation of the monograph “Bashkirs. Historical and ethnographic essays” (Moscow; Leningrad, 1955): notes, lists of illustrations, photographs (including 7 glass negatives), drawings and clippings from books (1900–1950’s) (SPbF ARAN. F. 1004. Op. 1. 10, 59, 536) are of particular interest. The records of the expedition to Bashkiria in 1952 which took place on the eve of the republication of the book “Bashkirs. Historical and ethnographic essays”: a notebook with data on the farms of the BASSR collective farms, ethnographic notes, calendars with contacts (d. 174, 175, 203) were saved. In a separate case, reviews of the published monograph are collected from the staff of the Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Bashkir Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (K. Akhmerov, T.G. Baishev, S.M. Vasiliev, R.G. Kuzeev, R.U. Kuzyev, A.N. Usmanov, G.V. Yusupov), as well as other scientists (S.A. Tokarev, S.S. Chernikov) (583). The documents on the publication of the monograph include an extract from the minutes of the meeting of the Presidium of the Bashkir branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, a memorandum by G.V. Yusupov to the Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the BFAN of the USSR and numerous correspondence (originals, copies, drafts) (d. 599). S.I. Rudenko’s correspondence with Ufa colleagues (linguist T.G. Baishev, archaeologists P.F. Ishcherikov and G.V. Yusupov, ethnographer N.V. Bikbulatov) (408, 606, 609, 616) is important. It is worth mentioning the Certificate of Honour of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the BASSR awarded to S.I. Rudenko for his great achievements in the field of Bashkir archaeology and ethnography and in connection with the 80th anniversary of his birth (d. 209). Letters of the Bashkir writer Tayfur Sagitov (1967–1969) with attached articles have been preserved (d. 134, 251, 252, 377). The materials of S.I. Rudenko, devoted to the study of the problems of nomadic civilization, including articles “On the study of the history and way of life of the peoples of the USSR”, “Dairy farming of nomadic pastoralists”, “Ethnos and ethnogenesis (regarding the discussion in the Department of Ethnography of the All-Russian Geographical Society)”, “On nomads”, reports [Results of the discussion on the problem of ethnogenesis], “Forms cattle breeding in connection with the question of the nomadic way of life” (D. 102, 103, 118, 119, 138, 555) are also significant. The fund presents unique photographs: expedition to the Southern Urals, ethnographic subjects, Laklinskaya cave, fishing dam in Bashkiria (Ilminsky’s negative) (D. 465, 466, 483, 518, 629, 636) and other documents.
