The significance of this research lies in the necessity to analyze the speech behavior of characters through the lens of ethnostylistics, focusing on their speech patterns in the context of a literary work. We gain insight into their personality paying attention to the character's speech patterns. The article explores the distinctive features of communication styles in the works of V.P. Astafiev and V.M. Shukshin. The Russian communication style is deeply intertwined with the concept of politeness, which is culturally and nationally specific and shaped by the unique characteristics of the Russian national character. Politeness serves as a crucial regulator of human behavior, manifesting itself not only through the use of formal expressions but also through the presence of culturally specific strategies. The aim of this article is to uncover the cultural and national peculiarities of the etiquette-based speech patterns of characters in the stories of these writers, which reflect phatic communication. In the works of V.P. Astafiev and V.M. Shukshin, which are rooted in Russian cultural traditions, the etiquette forms employed in the characters' conversations create an action. These works showcase a wide array of Russian speech etiquette, encompassing greetings, farewells, addresses, wishes, congratulations, thanks, apologies, agreements or disagreements, invitations, suggestions, and compliments. The etiquette phrases incorporated into the dialogues are distinct speech acts, either integrated into the dialogue structure or presented as independent statements. These include, for instance, expressions of gratitude and regret. The framework of etiquette phrases serves to maintain contact in a particular manner. In Russian communication, it is possible to employ a more informal level of politeness. The Russian communicative style is characterized by the uninhibited expression of emotions, often without considering the reaction of the interlocutor. The emotional discourse of the characters in the works of V. Astafyev and V. Shukshin exemplifies this characteristic. In Shukshin's works, a significant emphasis is placed on emotionally connotative and emotionally charged vocabulary, as well as the arrangement of linguistic elements at various levels within the literary text. Russian verbal communication is marked by an imbalance in roles and a manifestation of disparity between interlocutors. In Russian speech patterns, it is not uncommon to encounter anti-protocol forms that contribute to the development of estrangement between conversational partners.
